The federal government is moving to defund bicycle infrastructure, undermine projects designed to make our streets safer, and even make it possible to use federal transportation dollars to remove existing bike lanes. We know that protected bike lanes save lives. Our right to move safely through our own city should never be up for negotiation. Friday’s @criticalmassnola memorial ride was no easy endeavor. Santos Pabon, who was killed by a bus while commuting on his bicycle at Claiborne and Jackson, was my age, and he left behind two teenage sons. I also have a teenager (pictured behind me in the second photo at the @neworleansliberationcenter). I couldn’t imagine her having to live without me had I been hit and killed while commuting on my bicycle in the city.

Santos Pabon was the second bicyclist killed on Claiborne Ave this year. The tragic reality is that as long as our infrastructure is planned for the profits of the oil and automobile industry, and not for people, it won’t be the last. Instead of giving tax brakes to the oil, petrochemical, and tourism industry (that exploit our labor and siphon away the wealth our labor produces) we want to see the wealth we produce invested into housing, healthcare, public education, jobs with guaranteed living wages, AND, infrastructure.

Last night we rode in memory of the bicyclist who was killed on the Lafitte Greenway crossing Claiborne. We had a beautiful community ride, reflecting on her life and taking up space, demanding our right to the road. Infrastructure in New Orleans is designed to produce traffic violence. Another reality is possible, and we’re going to ride and make our demands known until there’s a citywide grid of interconnected, separated bike lanes designed to keep pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users safe.

I joined Critical Mass NOLA last Friday on the streets for a powerful Die-In to honor a 62-year-old woman killed while riding her bike across North Claiborne Avenue in the designated bike crossing at the Lafitte Greenway. She was doing everything right — waiting for traffic to clear in a marked bike route — when one driver stopped to let her pass, but the driver in the left lane (whose view was blocked) did not.

The fruit of car-centric infrastructure is death. In response to these deaths, Critical Mass Nola has committed to responding to traffic violence inflicted on bicyclists with die-ins. A die-in creates a visceral, human visualization of loss. It is more than an act of protest—it is a demonstration of collective grief. When bodies lie motionless on the pavement, they force drivers, officials, and bystanders to confront the human cost of unsafe streets.

Do you bike commute on the Lafitte Greenway? A fellow bicyclists was killed crossing Claiborn Ave on the Greenway Easter morning. The light at the crossing has been out for years. The car-centric infrastructure on N.Claiborne encourages speed and traffic violence. This could have been any one of us. Join us on Friday evening behind the ole U.S. Mint on Barracks St in the French Quarter at 6pm.

We’re calling on bicycle commuters the city over. Gather with us tomorrow for a die-in to commemorate the life of our fallen comrade. Critical Mass Nola is going to lead a die-in on Claiborne and Lafitte this Friday. We’re going to meet at 6pm at 425 Barracks St in the French Quarter. A 62-year-old woman was killed yesterday morning while crossing North Claiborne at Laffitte Ave by or on the Greenway. She did everything she was supposed to do. She stopped at the intersection, waited, and proceeded with caution. A driver in one lane even yielded to let her pass. And still—she was killed. Another driver moving through the adjacent lane never stopped, resulting in a fatality.
