PROTECT PEOPLE, NOT THE NEUTRAL GROUND The @la_dotd is proposing roadway improvements along US 90, including Gentilly Boulevard. This project is an opportunity to make our streets safer for everyone. But are our streets being designed around the safety of people or around the movement of automobiles? Within the last year, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on that part of Gentilly Boulevard, and another person was killed while operating an electric scooter.

We’re not certain if there’s another such celebration for Madonna del Ghisallo anywhere else in the world. We hope there is. Last night I got back on my bike for the first time since cancer with a bike ride with Critical Mass for the feast day of Our Lady of Ghisallo, the Catholic patron saint of cyclists. I joined with others as we rode for people who were killed while biking in our city. Ghost bikes, white-painted bicycles placed where a cyclist died, help us to remember them and cyclists safety.

Friday’s @criticalmassnola memorial ride was no easy endeavor. Santos Pabon, who was killed by a bus while commuting on his bicycle at Claiborne and Jackson, was my age, and he left behind two teenage sons. I also have a teenager (pictured behind me in the second photo at the @neworleansliberationcenter). I couldn’t imagine her having to live without me had I been hit and killed while commuting on my bicycle in the city.

Santos Pabon was the second bicyclist killed on Claiborne Ave this year. The tragic reality is that as long as our infrastructure is planned for the profits of the oil and automobile industry, and not for people, it won’t be the last. Instead of giving tax brakes to the oil, petrochemical, and tourism industry (that exploit our labor and siphon away the wealth our labor produces) we want to see the wealth we produce invested into housing, healthcare, public education, jobs with guaranteed living wages, AND, infrastructure.
