It is the 20th anniversary of when the London Metropolitan Police tried to shut down Critical Mass. Long time cycling advocate and CM participant Des Kay, with help from the Friends of the Earth, contested the decision. The appeal went all the way to the Law Lords, and ultimately was successful - ensuring the survival of Critical Mass and paving the way for the freedom that current riders enjoy today.

PHONE / BIKE THIEVES NOT WELCOME - In September a gang of thieves in balaclavas who infiltrated Critical Mass, tried to steal a Brompton from a participant, as her partner was stopped and taking a toilet break. Thanks to all those who intervened, and stopped the theft. If you see anyone attempting to steal anything on Critical Mass, either from a passer by or one of the participants, please - call others on the ride to stop and help - intervene to help the victim, at a level you feel comfortable with - de-escalate the situation - ask anyone involved in stealing to leave the ride immediately - look out for yourself, others, and your property - be calm, sensible and safe with any interactions you have - stay with friends or people you trust if the ride moves off again - tell others around you what is happening - if you can, get to the front of the ride and ask for the ride to stop, to deal with what has just happened, and to let others know.
